The National University of Equatorial Guinea (In Spanish: Universidad Nacional de Guinea Ecuatorial), shortly UNGE is a public institution of higher education, being the main university of the Republic of Equatorial Guinea in Central Africa. The university tradition of the UNGE dates back to the Spanish colonial period when the first higher schools in the country were created, anchored in the Spanish concern with the various decolonization movements that were beginning to gain shape on the African continent.

The academic journey of the UNGE began with the old Colonial Indigenous Institute, created on March 30, 1935, with a vocation for technical teaching. However, it was only 6 of August of 1943, when the Institute was elevated to Superior Indigenous School (ESI), which actually higher education began in Guinea. As of 1958, the ESI was renamed the Santo Tomás de Aquino Superior School, changing its name again, in 1959, to the Provincial Superior School.

In that period the establishment of Expedia diplomas of administration, teaching (today pedagogy ), and commerce (today economics ). While the country became independent, under the command of the dictator Francisco Macías Nguema, the school was reformulated, being renamed the Martin Luther King High School (ESMLK) in 1971. The school still had not managed to fulfill a broad training role, a fact that would only happen in the 1980s, with the unification of the ESMLK with the School of Education of Malabo, allowing mainly expand the training of graduates to teach at the primary and secondary levels.
